Master Gardeners are gardening enthusiasts who have completed a 40-hour course that is sponsored by Purdue University.  The 4-hour classes are hosted by each County Extension Agent in Indiana.

Gardening enthusiasts take 10 classes that cover topics like Indiana soil types, tree varieties, grasses, insects, plant diseases, landscape design, shrubs, and flowers that are common in Indiana.

The 302 residents of Edmonds Creek have the same problem—heavy compacted clay soils in their lawns.  The soil does not absorb moisture readily which results in anemic grass.

A solution that we use at our house is to apply pelletized lime each spring for at least three years. Pelletized lime is available at most garden stores in 40-pound bags.  One bag may be enough for more than one application depending on the size of your lawn. 

Use a lawn spreader to apply at the same rate that is recommended for the application of Weed and Feed fertilizer and apply the lime just before you expect rain. In a few days, your lawn will be the envy of your neighbors.  The lime will break down the clay and will allow for the absorption of moisture.
